Eagle Watch

by Zibby Kwiatek

This was my second year at the annual Sheffield Mills Eagle Watch and the eighteenth for the organizers of this exciting event. My friend Paul Coulet and I got up early in the morning of Saturday, January 24 and drove to the Valley, hoping for an interesting photo shoot. It was a frigid day and I was suffering from the bad cold. Nevertheless, I ventured outside with my trusty Canon 40D hoping for the best. This year I wanted a better lens, and I decided to enlist the help of a company called “Lens Lenders”. I found them on the internet. For $93.45 (shipping included) I’ve received a Canon 100-400mm lens to play with for the weekend.

There was not much eagle activity happening that morning. The organizers put food out for the eagles but there were no takers. We’d seen eagles far away on the trees but any attempt to approach them failed. They did not want to model on that morning. We decided to take advantage of the delicious pancake and sausage breakfast put out by the organizers at the community center. Yumm! I needed it.

Around 1:00PM, out of the blue (literally) eagles started flying above the field where their meal was being served. At first it appeared that some kind of quarrel was happening between eagles and seagulls (both were flying around seemingly arguing) but then the eagles started diving for the food. A feeding frenzy started. There must’ve been a dozen of those beautiful birds involved in the aerobatics. It was obvious that the seagulls and the crows were not happy about it, but we certainly were.

We went back the next day and the eagles cooperated again, although the weather did not. However the falling snow created a different background for our photographs.

You can see the outcome of the photo shoots in my gallery on Flickr.
