Nocturne 2010
By Karolina Szablewska

The NSSPA participated once again in the Nocturne night time art festival that was held October 16, 2010. We were located in an entrance hall to the Immigration Museum in Pier 21, Halifax. Five artists participated in displays and doing on-site work: Wanda Szubielski, Karolina Szablewska, Joanna Asha Roznowski, , Zibby Kwiatek, and Teresa Machel." We were working from inspiration of the Nocturnes by Frederick Chopin, a famous Polish composer. The theme was focused around Chopin to commemorate his 200th anniversary.
The artist working on site experienced art making outside of their normal practice. Being primarily an oil painter, Wanda decided to try using watercolours for the first time on heavy watercolour paper while her work was displayed in the background. Karolina used acrylics, which she hadn’t used for a long time, to paint a small painting for fun that tested her ability to paint in a set amount of time. Wanda thoroughly enjoyed her novice experience with watercolour, and Karolina ended with a complete, satisfying painting and the joy of working in public.
Joanna was also painting, but was working on a large acrylic abstract piece involving the mixing of complex acrylic techniques and flower forms. Joanna’s large painting allowed the viewers to see a work in progress in full detail and life, and the layers that go into a painting.
Meanwhile, Zibby enjoyed himself photographing the painters at work and the visitors, capturing the atmosphere of our presentation, outcome of which we can see below.
Teresa Machel did not participated in on site creation .She contributed with the acrylic painting, her fantasy about Chopin title "Nocturne in blue flat op.#2".
This year was the largest turn out for visitors coming to Nocturne, and we had many viewers. Lastly, the NSSPA is thankful for the hospitality of the volunteer staff at Pier 21 during Nocturne, and the availability of the space.
