Teresa Machel was borne in Warsaw, Poland when Nazis still occupied the country. As a young girl Teresa learned and realized importance of visual art. Intimidated by the power of art, she has chosen different profession. In 1968 she obtained medical degree from Warsaw Medical School followed by Fellowship and Ph.D. in Internal Medicine. In 1980 her family left Poland. She and her husband accepted position at Bengasi University Libya where they worked for almost 2 years. In January 1982, after proclamation of Martial Law in Poland, they fled to refuge camp in Latina, Italy leaving everything behind. Half a year later they were accepted to enter Canada as immigrants. First landed in Windsor, Ontario .Then after 3 years in Toronto, Ontario- 1985 family moved to Nova Scotia. In 1987 after completing residency program Teresa obtained Fellowship in Internal Medicine and became Fellow of Royal Collage of Physician and Surgeon of Canada. Today Teresa still works as Internal Medicine consultant in Windsor, NS where she creates her extraordinary artistic works.
In early 1990-is she started to work with fabrics. Her technique is derived from quilting. Teresa early works are predominantly renditions, using appliqué collages, of works by Paul Gaugin (Old Woman at Arles-1888; Peasant Women from Britany-1894); Henri Matisse (Pink Nude-1935); Amedeo Modigliani (Portrait of Jeanne Hebuterne, Left arm behind Head-1919); Ilya Mashkow (Still Life with Pumpkin-1914) and Leonardo Da Vinci (Mona Lisa-1503). Her unique applications are “marriage the European and American heritage”. In 2003 she started new collection of her own compositions “Brains” (Reclining Brain; Brain Storm; Broken Heart; Chemo-Brain; Musician).
In 1999 she met Cheryl Ruthlege, respected and well known watercolor-artist. She became Teresa new friend and teacher. Cheryl’s patience, kindness and enthusiasm encouraged Teresa to try brush and water-colors for the first time in her life. 2007 took the course with Twila Robar-DeCosta in acrylic painting. Her works are in private collections in Canada, USA, UK and Poland
